SUSTAINABILITY

SUSTAINABILITY

Environmental sustainability is at the core of our business at Growthpoint, and we are committed to creating sustained value by integrating environmental, social and economic issues into our corporate strategy.

In the last 10 years, Growthpoint has played a critical role in leading the transition of green building as an experimental activity in the property sector to an integrated component in the conceptualisation, implementation and operation of buildings.

Greener Cities

As a platinum founding member of the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA), we work hard to create sustainable workspaces with minimal environmental impact, while providing maximum benefit to the people occupying these spaces.

STRATEGY

Our Strategy & Targets

We are taking our climate response strategy to the next level by implementing a robust and viable carbon-neutral strategy. We aim to achieve carbon neutrality through data-driven targets that benefit the business and our stakeholders.

Energy efficiency, off-site renewables, and on-site renewables have been identified as four critical role players in our overall strategy.

EFFICIENCY & RENEWABLES

GHG emissions total - tCO,e

GHG emissions intensity - tCHO2e/m2/pa

Energy intensity - kWh/m2pa

Renewable energy - MW installed

Water intensity - kl/m2/pa

RENEWABLE ENERGY

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Our focus is on rooftop solar PV plants, which are currently the most viable renewable energy option for our property portfolio. We plan to increase energy generation from solar plants significantly to achieve energy efficiency and security and reduce CO2 emissions from energy consumption.

We are excited about the opportunity to support the planned carbon-neutral strategy with a solar PV roll-out.

Wheeling

Wheeling is a process where electricity is bought and sold between private parties, using the existing grid to exchange power from where it is generated to end-users that can be long distances apart. We signed a pilot wheeling agreement with the City of Cape Town was signed at the end of August. In a milestone for renewable energy in Cape Town, solar power from The Constantia Village shopping centre was successfully injected into the city’s energy grid for use at the 36 Hans Strijdom office building in September 2023. This energy exchange between two Growthpoint-owned properties represents the first steps taken towards using wheeling to contribute towards our carbon emissions targets. We are currently investigating opportunities to access renewable energy at a utility scale and conclude power purchase agreements to optimise wheeling opportunities.

Greenovate

The Greenovate Awards aims to expose the students to key focus areas concerning sustainability within the industry and introduce the industry to the talent available to them. The Awards encourages students to learn about green building and sustainability early in their careers.

Essentially, we want them to enter the market as advocates for green building, passionate about creating better, more sustainable cities, towns, and neighbourhoods. These are tomorrow’s leaders who will take the green building movement forward and ensure it continues to innovate and inspire.
